Overview

While copyright protection has been an integral part of U.S. law for over 200 years, rapid advances in technology and global business have made it more important than ever before. For example, copyrights are often infringed when Internet users upload protected movies, videos, or musical products onto web sites, or when users copy content from a proprietary web site. Similarly, copyright law is often violated when foreign manufacturers produce “knock-offs” or “look-alikes” of protected artistic or technological goods. Read more about copyrights.

At Fredrikson & Byron, we know that aggressive copyright protection is critical to help clients defend and build their business assets. Our copyright attorneys – many of whom have backgrounds in advertising, computer technology, dance, film, and the performing arts – help clients design copyright solutions that support their larger business objectives. We do all of this in an approachable, down-to-earth manner – because copyright protection isn’t just about the law. It’s about helping clients reap the rewards of their creativity.

Services

Our Copyrights Group offers services in three broad areas, including:

Artistic Copyrights. As advocates for the arts, we deeply respect our clients’ vision and works. We strive to find creative, efficient ways to provide strong copyright protections for clients, while not creating undue restrictions on their artistic license.

Business Copyrights. We take a practical approach to serving corporate clients. For example, our team consistently looks for new ways that clients can achieve their business objectives while avoiding potential copyright or intellectual property infringement. Because we have colleagues skilled in litigation and corporate law, our group can quickly assemble a nimble, experienced team that helps clients aggressively compete in their specific markets.

Technology Copyrights. We do extensive work in protecting the rights of clients in high-tech endeavors, such as software development or web publishing. Our attorneys stay current with the most recent laws (such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) covering technology and copyright, and we help clients anticipate potential issues that may affect development or sales of future products. When necessary, we also advise and assist clients that need to police their assets.
