John Stout Receives 2009 Twin Cities International Citizens Award
Minneapolis, MN April 2, 2009 – – John Stout has been awarded the 2009 Twin Cities International Citizens Award by International Leadership Institute, a Minneapolis non-profit that was established in 1994 to increase and strengthen international interchange and understanding between Minnesota and the world, with the goal of empowering communities of color by promoting leadership, justice, peace, democracy, and opportunities for commerce and cultural exchange.
John was the founder of Fredrikson & Byron’s International Group in 1991 and chaired the group for 10 years. He immediately recognized the importance of knowing the language and culture in the regions in which the firm served clients. Today Fredrikson has 14 lawyers, several of whom are natives of the jurisdictions in which they work, all of whom are multi-lingual and 3 of whom hold licenses to practice in both the U.S. and their native countries. Attorneys and staff in the group speak 16 languages, and represent international companies doing business in the U.S. as well as domestic companies doing business internationally.
John co-founded the Metropolitan Economic Development Association (1971), a nonprofit that provides assistance to ethnic-owned businesses in Minnesota, and the Milestone Growth Fund (1991), a nonprofit fund that invests in those businesses. Currently, John is a vice-chair of the American Bar Association Committee on Corporate Governance and co-chairs its sub-committee on International Governance Developments. John also serves as Board and Executive Committee member of the Center for International Private Enterprises, a Washington, D.C. based non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which promotes democratic principles and private enterprise in second and third level economies around the world. He frequently advises senior management, directors, boards and board committees on a variety of governance matters including board and committee governing documents and leadership performance evaluations, current governance developments, special issues which merit review or investigation and director protection. A frequent writer and speaker on governance subjects, John also teaches corporate governance courses at the business and law schools of the University of St. Thomas.
