David Lillehaug Named One of Minnesota Lawyer’s 2009 Attorneys of the Year
Minneapolis, MN December 23, 2009 – – Fredrikson & Byron attorney David L. Lillehaug has been named one of Minnesota Lawyer’s Attorneys of the Year for 2009. The annual awards are presented to a select group of attorneys who distinguished themselves during the year through their accomplishments. The criteria for selection include leadership in the profession, involvement in major cases or other newsworthy events, excellence in corporate or transactional services and public service, according to Minnesota Lawyer, a legal trade publication.
Lillehaug was recognized for his work as lead Minnesota counsel for U.S. Senator Al Franken in the eight-month recount and election contest between Franken and former Senator Norm Coleman. At the beginning of U.S. Senate recount, Lillehaug obtained a temporary injunction that allowed the Franken team to obtain copies of rejected absentee ballots. Eventually, when some of those ballots were shown to have been rejected erroneously, and were opened, Franken netted 263 votes and was certified the winner. Then, when Senator Coleman commenced an election contest to overturn the results, Lillehaug, with a team from the Fredrikson & Byron and Perkins Coie law firms, tried and won a seven-week trial before a three-judge panel. The trial result was affirmed by a unanimous Minnesota Supreme Court.
A former U.S. Attorney, Lillehaug is well-recognized in the Minnesota legal community. Franken is the third U.S. senator Lillehaug has represented.
