Pro Bono & Community Service

2011 Report Cover

“Stories have power. They delight, enchant, touch, teach, recall, inspire, motivate, challenge. They help us understand. They imprint a picture on our minds. Want to make a point or raise an issue? Tell a story.”

Janet Litherland

Writers will tell you that a good story needs to have three components – a beginning, middle and an end. Great stories draw us in from the first sentences. The middle, in which plot and characters are richly developed, offers sustained appeal. But it is the ending of a great story that gives the greatest satisfaction, evoking insights and touching us in ways often unexpected. As we reflect on our past year and the pro bono and community service contributions provided by our lawyers, paralegals, librarians, interns, agents, and staff, we’re reminded of the stories – about the very real challenges encountered by many who are faced with life-altering legal issues, over-burdened courts, or limited resources. Two things stand out: first, the impact the case had on the individual or community organization; and second, the impact the experience had on the lawyer or employee. Together, they tell a story of giving and receiving, of touching another life, of feeling a person’s relief in receiving news of a positive outcome. They tell a story of getting back just as much, if not more, than one has given. Our clients inspire us with their graciousness; they humble us with their courage. They encourage us to be what we have trained to be – advocates for those who are less fortunate and for those who find our legal system beyond reach. They challenge us to help them write a different – and more satisfying – ending to their story.
