Shareholders Eric J. Snustad and Charles D. Segelbaum were featured in The National Law Journal’s Twin Cities Counsel to Counsel Report for their intellectual property work for Tennant Co. Snustad and Segelbaum were among seven other attorneys recognized for partnering with companies that were spotlighted for their exceptional legal teams thriving in the region’s manufacturing, medical, technology, food, real estate and banking sectors.

Snustad focuses on prosecuting and managing patents. He also advises clients on how to stop (or prevent) infringement of their intellectual property. Snustad does a great deal of work helping clients avoid the patents of competitors. When competitors have invalid patents, Snustad works with litigators to attack those patents in court or, when appropriate, he asks the Patent Office to reconsider the validity of the patents by initiating Reexaminations or Reviews. Snustad is highly skilled in a wide range of mechanical arts. Snustad has worked extensively on a variety of coating technologies, particularly in connection with thin films and vacuum deposition methods. Snustad also has a particular interest in aerospace technology, particularly the mechanical components used in this field, as well as products in which flow characteristics are important.

With a background in electrical and mechanical engineering and 18 years of business-focused legal experience, Segelbaum advises clients on patent due diligence, litigation, preparation, and clearance matters that hinge on understanding of complex technology. In order to provide effective counsel, Segelbaum gains insight into clients’ objectives, business activities and operating environments in conjunction with performing patent analysis and conducting IP-related assessments. As chair of the Firm’s IP Due Diligence Group and former chair of the Patents Group, a position he held for eight years, Segelbaum has helped advance initiatives in the areas of process uniformity and fee predictability. Prior to practicing law, Segelbaum was a data network engineer and project manager for the Federal Reserve Systems’ national data communications network. Segelbaum is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His practice also includes trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and unfair competition.
