Immigration attorney Robert D. Aronson was recently honored as the inaugural recipient of the Roberta Freedman Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the field of physician immigration. The award was granted by the International Medical Graduate (IMG) Taskforce during the recent annual meeting of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

According to the IMG Taskforce, the Roberta Freedman Lifetime Achievement Award was created to recognize an immigration practitioner who exhibits “excellence in the advancement in the field of physician immigration [and] to an individual who over the course of their career has contributed to the scholarly advancement of the field of physician immigration law, helped foster and mentor practitioners in the field while simultaneously exhibiting the best of the lawyerly attributes of professionalism, integrity, and client service.”

“Through his unwavering devotion, Bob has been responsible for bringing untold numbers of gifted physicians to every corner of America – from dense, inner city neighborhoods to desolate rural communities,” said Rita Sostrin, treasurer of the IMG Taskforce. “In doing so, he has transformed the destinies of countless international doctors and the countless patients who depend upon them for their health and their lives. In presenting the Roberta Freedman Lifetime Achievement Award to Bob, we forever link his name to her legacya legacy of unbounded kindness… unreserved commitment… and undisputable professionalism.”

Through his client representational services, his public advocacy, his mentorship of other attorneys, and his leadership within the immigration bar, Aronson has been instrumental not only in qualifying International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and International Allied Healthcare Professionals for immigration benefits based on employment positions within both community-based medical practices and academic medical centers, but also in influencing the entire immigration legal framework for healthcare professionals. His clients include some of the nation’s major university institutions and healthcare systems that look to Aronson to provide timely, responsible and effective advice on immigration law and strategy. He is a prolific author and engaging speaker on immigration matters, having authored over 70 articles and spoken at innumerable national and regional meetings, workshops, and conferences. He has a national reputation as a leader in his professional field as evidenced by various major professional accomplishments, including: Fulbright Fellow at the law schools of Harvard and Moscow State University; Editor-in-Chief of The Physician Immigration Book (ILW: 2011-2012 Edition), legal advisor on the advisory body to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in its study on appropriate immigration policy for international physicians; and recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award of the Indiana University School of Law.

Aronson was the co-founder and first chair (1992-2002) of the IMG Taskforce, an organization that is comprised of legal professionals who are dedicated to helping Americans in rural and other physician-shortage areas obtain the basic medical services they need and deserve. The IMG Taskforce strives to educate national and state policy makers, administrative officials, and the American public on the need for fair and reasonable laws for allowing international physicians to become licensed as physicians and to begin or continue their medical careers in the United States. The IMG Taskforce works on behalf of universities, teaching hospitals, medical centers, and clinics of all sizes, and on behalf of international medical graduates seeking necessary authorizations.
