Kevin Riach named a 2017 Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer

November 22, 2017

Fredrikson & Byron attorney Kevin C. RiachFredrikson & Byron shareholder Kevin C. Riach has been announced as a 2017 Attorney of the Year honoree for the second time in his career by Minnesota Lawyer magazine. Riach has been honored for his pro bono work defending Robin L. Hensel, after she was charged for disorderly conduct for sitting on a chair that she placed between the public galley and the city council dais in Little Falls, Minnesota. The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the law under which Hensel was charged was overly broad, saying it potentially criminalized free speech. Riach and his fellow Attorney of the Year honorees will be celebrated at a February 7, 2018, dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis.

“The First Amendment is the foundation stone of our democracy, and we must be constantly vigilant in its defense.  It was a privilege to work on this case,” Riach said.

Fredrikson & Byron shareholder Edward Q. Cassidy nominated Riach for the award, and he said, “In the tradition of John Adams, Kevin, to the benefit of all Minnesotans, hammered out First Amendment justice for our client.”

Riach, also a 2011 Attorney of the Year, represents medical device companies, hospitals, physicians and other individual and corporate clients in civil fraud lawsuits brought under the False Claims Act. He advises clients facing government investigations, helps clients respond to government subpoenas and conducts internal investigations to assess and mitigate risk. Riach also defends clients charged criminally with fraud, money laundering, theft, violent crimes and other serious felonies and misdemeanors.

In its 18th year, Minnesota Lawyer’s Attorneys of the Year program honors lawyers based on the following criteria: leadership in the profession, involvement in major cases, other newsworthy events, excellence in corporate or transactional services and public service. Nominations were submitted by judges, bar groups, clients and attorneys. The honorees come from diverse practice groups, including criminal law, litigation, public service, intellectual property and in-house counsel.
