The judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa have appointed Fredrikson & Byron shareholder Bridget R. Penick to its Merit Selection Panel. The panel is responsible for reviewing all applicants and recommending to the district judges, no later than December 31, 2020, the five persons it considers best qualified to fill the vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of Magistrate Judge Celeste F. Bremer.

Penick, co-lead of Fredrikson & Byron’s Des Moines office, is a litigator whose practice focuses on employment law. She advises employers on employment, labor, and employment-related immigration issues and compliance. Penick represents employers of all sizes in various state and federal courts and administrative agencies.

The merit selection panel is appointed by majority vote of the district judges of the court. The panel must consist of lawyers and other members of the community. Each member must either be a resident of the district or, if not a resident, have significant ties to the community of the district within which the magistrate judge is to serve.
