Fredrikson & Byron attorneys Grant D. Fairbairn, Lora Friedemann, Thomas R. HipkinsAnn M. LaddKurt J. NiederlueckeCharles D. Segelbaum and David C. West are featured in the ninth edition of the IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals. The IAM Patent 1000 is a unique guide that identifies the top patent professionals in key jurisdictions around the globe and shines a spotlight on the firms and individuals that are deemed outstanding in this area of practice.

In its analysis of Fredrikson, the IAM Patent 1000 states that the firm’s “deployment of increasingly advanced technological tools” further strengthens the team’s patent services. It notes, “A sweet spot is assisting medium-sized entities that lack in-house IP resources,” adding that the firm’s attorneys operate “from a vantage point that gives them a 360-degree understanding [of] clients’ products and businesses.”

The IAM Patent 1000 continues its evaluation of Fredrikson with a look at the individual attorneys’ strengths and areas of expertise. Thomas Hipkins, chair of the Patents Group, “runs the patent group like a well-oiled machine and has become an adroit manager in recent years; if there are sticking points getting in the way of efficient operation, he clears them right up.”

Charles Segelbaum, Ann Ladd and David West form “one of Minnesota’s best transactional IP practices in the technology and life sciences spaces” and “have a flair for negotiating deals with highly complex structures.”

Segelbaum, chair of the IP Due Diligence Group, “is a perfect fit for those with tight budgets, thanks to his ability to motivate and get the best out of lower-cost patent agents.” Ladd, a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee, “understands the healthcare ecosystem and has the roadmap to successful collaboration; likewise West in the medical device and software arenas.” West is the chair of the Technology & Data Group.

“Patrons are also well served when there are lawsuits to be filed or defended,” the guide mentions when describing the work of Kurt Niederluecke, Grant Fairbairn and Lora Friedemann. They “are never fazed, whether they are facing the most technically dense material or taking on an industry leader.”

Niederluecke is designated “a first-chair trial lawyer who has been landing ever-bigger cases; he is a valuable mentor within the team, too.” Fairbairn, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, “has fought and won important patent, licensing and trade secret cases across the country.” Head of the firm’s Intellectual Property Division, Friedemann, “has a close relationship with the bench and presents with great credibility in patent and trademark suits.”

The IAM Patent 1000 guide was compiled following an extensive research process, which included nearly 1,800 interviews with numerous attorneys at law, patent attorneys and in-house counsel to gather market intelligence on the leading players in the field. Individuals qualify for a listing in the IAM Patent 1000 when they receive sufficient positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate.
