Immigration Attorney Robert Aronson Elected Chair of HIAS Board of Directors
HIAS, the global Jewish nonprofit agency that supports refugees, recently elected Fredrikson & Byron shareholder Robert D. Aronson as the new chair of its board of directors. Aronson officially began this role on July 1. HIAS is the nation’s oldest refugee rights organization and the voice of the American Jewish community in providing refugees of all faiths and backgrounds with protection and dignity.
Throughout his career as an immigration attorney, Aronson has represented refugees and asylum seekers from around the world. He assisted in expanding HIAS’ scope of work from serving solely Jewish refugees to working with vulnerable populations of all backgrounds and faiths. Aronson has served on the HIAS board for 28 years and has chaired several of the organization’s committees.
“I am honored and humbled to be elected as the new HIAS board chair, to help build further on our efforts to restore humane, rational policies and attitudes toward refugees – both nationally and globally – so as to give voice to the silent and hope to the despondent, and to effectuate the core Jewish value of kiddush hachayim – the sanctification of life,” Aronson shared. “HIAS for me is as intimate and mystical as a connection to the whispers of my own ancestors and as grandiose and empowering as its mission to help refugees and asylum seekers all over the world.”
Aronson practices in the field of employment-based immigration with a special focus on immigration matters for academic institutions, healthcare organizations, international physicians and IT professionals. He has a national reputation as a leader in his professional field, as evidenced by various major professional accomplishments, including the 2017 Sidney Barrows Lifetime Commitment Award of the Cardozo Society and the Distinguished Service Award of the Indiana University School of Law. Aronson is a prolific author and engaging speaker on immigration matters, having authored over 70 articles and spoken at innumerable national and regional meetings, workshops and conferences. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Law and was a Fulbright Scholar at the law schools of Harvard University and Moscow State University (Russia).
