Copyright Protection & Enforcement
In an increasingly media-driven economy in which valuable proprietary content can be stolen, copied, and distributed by savvy digital infringers, copyright protection and enforcement are crucial.
What We Do
From artists, musicians, photographers, and architects to major media publishers, television production companies, and fashion apparel retailers, Fredrikson’s Intellectual Property (IP) team represents all kinds of creative clients for whom copyright assets are important revenue generators.
Our copyright attorneys – several of whom have backgrounds in advertising, high tech, publishing, motion pictures & television, and the performing arts – help clients design copyright solutions that support their larger business objectives. As the firm where law and business meet, we advise clients on how best to acquire and leverage copyrighted assets to maximize monetization, and we assist them in negotiating and drafting favorable license agreements. We identify those assets most likely to be infringed by unlicensed users and register them with the U.S. Copyright Office so that our clients may take advantage of statutory remedies if infringement occurs, and we assist clients in taking steps to deter infringement. And, when necessary, we litigate aggressively to enforce our client’s copyrights or to provide sturdy defense for clients accused of infringement.
Our expertise covers legal issues involved in traditional copyrighted media such as books, artworks, sculpture, photography, software, motion pictures & television, theatrical productions and choreography, musical compositions and recordings, and architectural works; in addition, our IP team’s expertise extends to the copyright aspects of new information technologies and communications devices, proprietary digital media and online content, management of digital rights, big data aggregation and archiving, e-commerce, and social media platforms.
Finally, Fredrikson’s IP team works with clients to ensure that the protection and enforcement of their copyright assets is coordinated with a comprehensive effort to build and enhance all of their intellectual property, including their patentable ideas and inventions, their trademarks and overall brand identity, and their trade secrets to provide clients with an IP portfolio that will give them a competitive edge in the marketplace.
