Fredrikson & Byron attorneys Grant D. Fairbairn, Lora Friedemann, Thomas R. HipkinsAnn M. LaddKurt J. NiederlueckeCharles D. Segelbaum and David C. West are featured in the 2021 edition of the IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals. The IAM Patent 1000 is a unique guide that identifies the top patent professionals in key jurisdictions around the globe and shines a spotlight on the firms and individuals that are deemed outstanding in this area of practice.

“Highly proficient at the intersection of intellectual property, technological development and business, Fredrikson & Byron combines a sophisticated patent offering with complementary insight in data privacy, cybersecurity and other matters of importance to innovative companies,” the IAM Patent 1000 remarks, adding, “Communicating on a one-to-one level with inventors, in-house counsel and the C-suite, its attorneys make light work of complex prosecution, litigation and transactional briefs.”

Continuing in its evaluation of Fredrikson & Byron, the IAM Patent 1000 provides commentary on the individual team members’ strengths and areas of expertise. Thomas Hipkins, chair of the Patents Group, “homes in on clients’ underlying objectives, accurately analyzes the risk landscape and proposes optimal patent protection strategies. He supports, among others, a diversified technology and manufacturing entity and a pioneering medical diagnostics company – both global leaders.”

Charles Segelbaum, chair of the IP Due Diligence Group, “gets right down to business, figuratively and literally: his advice is straightforward and direct, as well as commercially focused.” Segelbaum’s “extensive engagement in due diligence has given him a fine appreciation of patent value,” a characteristic the IAM Patent 1000 mentions is shared by Ann Ladd and David West. Ladd and West, referred to in the guide as “the central pillars of the firm’s technology transactions practice,” are highlighted for their “informed view of the market and great judgement, which they capitalise on in practical and problem-solving ways.” Ladd is a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and West is the chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Division.

“Another secret to the ensemble’s contentious success is the dynamic teamwork that sees Kurt Niederluecke, Lora Friedemann and Grant Fairbairn regularly collaborate,” the IAM Patent 1000 explains. Niederluecke and Friedemann “recently showed their tenacity in defending Medtronic,” while Fairbairn, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, and Niederluecke “don’t just run the standard playbook, but carefully calibrate strategies for each matter,” as seen in their work representing Edelbrock.

The IAM Patent 1000 guide was compiled following an extensive research process, which included approximately 1,800 interviews with numerous attorneys at law, patent attorneys and in-house counsel to gather market intelligence on the leading players in the field. Individuals qualify for a listing in the IAM Patent 1000 when they receive sufficient positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate.
