Each edition spotlights a team member or group making an impact—showcasing their reasons for serving our community and applauding their efforts in Special Olympics’ Inclusion Revolution.
Meet Heather Stone, a billing analyst at Fredrikson.
In fall 2025, Fredrikson internally announced its sponsorship of the upcoming 2026 Special Olympics USA Games during a private firm presentation. Heather was moved by an athlete who shared their story and inspired by the firm's commitment to supporting the Games, from providing pro bono legal support to encouraging employee volunteerism through additional community service time. Rather than take a summer vacation, Heather chose to spend a week at the USA Games as a volunteer.
Heather signed up for more than seven shifts, serving in a variety of sporting events. “It was awesome being so up close and kind of in the action with the athletes.” As a tennis court monitor and ball kid, she helped keep matches running smoothly. At the swimming venue, she escorted athletes to their lanes and held their belongings between events. During the Opening Ceremony, she served as an athlete marshal, welcoming competitors onto the field and helping athletes from Hawaii and Illinois find their seating sections.
While every shift brought memorable experiences, one moment stood out. On the final day of swimming, athletes and coaches surprised the volunteers with gratitude, inviting them to walk around the pool while receiving hugs, high-fives and applause. “I was overcome with emotion that they were thanking us,” Heather said.
For Heather, the USA Games are a reminder of the goodwill that exists in the world and the power of encouragement, acceptance and connection. Her message to athletes, families and fellow volunteers: “Your generosity of spirit, trust and love is inspiring and is seen.”
