John M. Koneck, President of Fredrikson & Byron, has been selected to receive the Hennepin County Bar Association’s 2015 Pro Bono Publico Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual for their career-long work on behalf of the community. He will receive the award at the Hennepin County Bar Association’s annual Bar Benefit on Thursday, March 19, 2015. Koneck joins a list of distinguished prior award recipients from Fredrikson including Clinton E. Cutler (2000) and James E. Dorsey (1996).

Koneck was nominated by Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN) in recognition of his long-standing commitment to serve the disadvantaged personally by attending clinics and taking full representation cases. VLN also recognized his leadership role in promoting and supporting pro bono service within Fredrikson. VLN noted that Koneck leads by example by volunteering at VLN’s Consumer Protection Workshop where he meets with clients being sued for consumer debt, and by volunteering at the Real Estate Clinic, where he meets with clinics to resolve a variety of real estate issues. VLN estimates that Koneck has personally taken nearly 200 cases since 2002.

“We are proud of John’s achievement,” said Mary Ranum, chair of the firm’s Board of Directors. “His recognition symbolizes the firm’s long-standing commitment to helping individuals in need and nonprofit organizations throughout the community.”

At Fredrikson, Koneck handles both complex real estate transactions, including sales, financings and leases, and complex real estate disputes and litigation, including contract disputes, foreclosures, workouts and bankruptcy. He has handled real estate transactions and disputes involving commercial, industrial, and multi-family sales and acquisitions, brokerage agreements, commercial lease, tax and business planning, and construction and permanent real estate financing. He has substantial experience in bankruptcy and debtor/creditor law and has represented borrowers and lenders in real estate workouts, and debtors and secured parties in real estate bankruptcy cases.

Koneck is certified as a Real Property Law Specialist by the Real Property Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. He is also co-chair Minnesota State Bar Real Property Certification Council, a member of the Governing Council of the Real Property Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association, and a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.
