Fredrikson & Byron attorneys Lora Friedemann, Thomas R. Hipkins, Ann M. Ladd, Kurt J. Niederluecke, Charles D. Segelbaum and David C. West were featured in the 2018 edition of the IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals. Now in its seventh edition, the IAM Patent 1000 is commonly regarded as the definitive ‘go-to’ resource for those seeking to identify world-class, private practice patent expertise and leading expert witnesses in the United States.

In its analysis of Fredrikson & Byron, the IAM Patent 1000 remarked that the firm “has a superbly well-rounded patent practice and can also boast strength in depth when it comes to litigation, prosecution, counselling and transactions. Making the package even more compelling for one-stop shoppers, it puts up talented and creative lawyers without charging an arm and a leg for their services.”

The IAM Patent 1000 noted, “The litigation practice has been busy, with new engagements in the medical device space (among many other areas) regularly landing on desks of litigators Kurt Niederluecke and Lora Friedemann.” Head of the Intellectual Property Division, Friedemann “has proven her mettle as a lead trial lawyer in cases across the spectrum of IP rights. Few individuals know the ins and outs of practice before the District of Minnesota as well as she does.” Niederluecke, chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group, “often deploys aggressive strategies fast in order to put opponents on the back foot.”

Categorizing Ann Ladd and David West as “commercial IP experts,” the IAM Patent 1000 added that Ladd and West “have a sophisticated knowledge of hot topics in the life sciences industry, such as data privacy. Both also know how to get signatures on the dotted line of deals in the high-tech, internet and e-commerce areas.” Ladd is a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and its Executive Committee, and West serves as chair of the Technology & Data Group.

The IAM Patent 1000 identified Charles Segelbaum, chair of the IP Due Diligence Group, as “the man to call” for IP due diligence, further stating that “his incisive analytical skills blend with a thoroughly commercial approach.” Chair of the Patents Group, Thomas Hipkins “has always thought ahead and refined his strategies with the potential for litigation in mind; accordingly, he has successfully positioned himself as the go-to for risk assessments and freedom-to-operate opinions.”

The IAM Patent 1000 guide was compiled following an extensive research process, which included nearly 1,800 interviews with numerous attorneys at law, patent attorneys and in-house counsel to gather market intelligence on the leading players in the field. Individuals qualify for a listing in the IAM Patent 1000 when they receive sufficient positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate.
